R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Project providing equipment, machinery, and facility maintenance and repair on several hundred miles of waterway and 10 locks/dams/spillways on the system. Position is based at our office at Whitten Lock and Dam near Dennis, MS. R&D is an EEO Employer.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position repairs, services, adjusts and tests a wide variety of mobile and stationary machines and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanics (engine and electric powerd). Operates and inspects diesel and gasoline-powered equipment in order to diagnose defects. Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment and machinery. Cleans, lubricates, replaces parts and/or components, and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles including earthmoving equipment, pumps, generators, mobile construction equipment, etc.  Primarily shop-based but also performs field repairs.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:
  • Evaluate and repair vehicles, earthmoving equipment, stationary machinery, small gas/diesel driven equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Assess mechanical or electrical problems and perform applicable repair.
  • Read and understand equipment operating manual and/or repair guide.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers, gages, etc.
  • Repair or replace damaged or worn parts.
  • Assess issues, identify components, and source OEM or replacement parts or components.
  • Supervise assistants/helpers when required by the task.
  • Create documentation on repairs and services providing legible and accurate information.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in the heavy equipment/machinery and gas/diesel engine repair trade including diagnostic, preventive maintenance and repair methods.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Competent knowledge of fuels, oils, and filters.
  • Advanced skills in mechanical repair and adjustment with basic skill to perform gas and electric welding/cutting.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret operating manuals and repair guides and work from manufacturer drawings or field sketches.
  • Ability to plan and schedule multiple tasks and effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; exercise good judgment; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to perform required mechanical component and system assessments.
  • Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines, company policies, 
  • Ability to operate a forklift, overhead crane, stationary equipment lifts, truck crane, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized equipment used in structural, hydraulic, and mechanical systems repair.
  • Have strong mechanical aptitude, and ability to read drawings, reference manuals, repair manuals, and assembly instruction guides.
  • Performs work safely and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or formal training in diesel engine and/or heavy construction equipment; Prefer applicable technical school diploma/certificate.
  • Must have five (5) years of experience in heavy equipment and engine diagnosis and repair using observation, measurement, and electronic analyzers. Prefer 10 years.
  • Must be able to read and interpret equipment diagrams, operating manuals, schematics, etc.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and commercial classification required for lead position.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of service and construction equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequent walking and standing; Must have good manual dexterity.
  • Heavy Work; Exerting up to 100 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Good manual dexterity and frequent use of power and hand tools.
  • Frequently lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. dexterity and frequent use of power and hand tools.
  • Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range), bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling, twisting, crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
  • Vision, speech, smell and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.
  • Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Some field travel and occasional overtime. Occasional overnight stays.

Job Type: Full-time.

Schedule:
  • Mon-Fri 8hrs; Alternate (at company option -  4-days/week 10hrs per day).
  • Overtime.
  • Weekend availability.
